The styles that come with the default "your site" template provide a range of possibilities. These styles can be used as is or as a "jumping off" point.

The look of the site is determined by the template used to display the site. This "template" lays out the module positions (meaning the structure of the pages loaded) and uses stylesheets for the aesthethics. Stylesheets change the background colors, the spacing, the fonts, the alignment, border styles and widths, column widths and heights, the bullets used in lists, the way the logo is displayed, the nature of any highlighting that goes on and a bunch more. They change how web pages are accessed for printing and how they work for accessibility issues. And, it is these stylesheets that change when you choose a new "style" from the control panel above.
